When seeking mother scholarships it helps to determine just what kind of mother you are or what kind of mother you are seeking financial aid for. Not only will that help clarify where to look for aid but also could give some new avenues for money for college. So, this help starts with determining what kind of mother scholarships would one be suited for.

Single Mother

This type of mother is the most recognized form of mom when people are thinking about scholarships for moms. Probably, because of the hardships that some single mothers come across and are highlighted in the media, that education seems to be a quality fix. Statistics abound for women who may have become mothers at a young age and a deficiency in education seems to a common theme among them. Others may indeed be older, but still the children’s father is no longer available to help with the rearing of the children.

Most mother scholarships for single moms will be found outside of the universities and colleges. The reason why is that most financial aid is provided by the United States government and the government cannot discriminate just for single moms. Also, even today most schools are still designed to serve traditional, single coeds. They do assist families very well.

That does not mean the college will not be able to help, they can help tremendously but mainly to pointing to sources for money outside of the school. Some colleges or universities may have endowments that serve single mothers, but they are usually found outside of the institution.

Domestic Returning To School

One category that is harder to locate mother scholarships is for non-traditional students. That means moms that may now be in a place in life that she can return to school. Possibly her children are older and do not need her care as much, they could even be in college themselves. Still, this is an area where scholarships are growing in number for the non-traditional students.

However, what could hinder finding scholarships for returning moms is financial need. Much of the available scholarships are need based, that is the available money is based upon the financial need of the recipients. Because a domestic mom returning to school is likely to be financially secure after supporting a number of children, the formula may show not much need. On the other hand, if the parents are still claiming the kids as dependents, the formula may actually work in the family’s favor. The best thing to do is go ahead and actually fill out the financial aid forms for need based aid. It is free to do and can pay off handsomely.

Beyond that there may be a limited number of financial sources for mothers of all ages or scholarships designed for the returning student regardless of gender. Mother scholarships for returning students may exist at some private schools and smaller schools. They would be more likely to be found at schools that serve a large commuter population.

Professional Mother

This may be the hardest mother scholarships demographic of all. Again, the need based factor works against professional moms who are returning to school. Most mother scholarships are targeted for disadvantaged women. A professional mom would be seen as already successful and less in need of financial aid for school.

However, there is one area where there would be money for college and a professional woman would have an advantage. That area is with scholarships from professional organizations. There could be scholarship for mothers from traditionally female dominated fields like nursing or human resources. Or the opposite could be equally true, there could be women or mother scholarships for male-centric fields like engineering or construction. But because those two extremes could have scholarships for mothers, it is less likely professions in the middle would have mom specific scholarships.

A final bright side though, because a professional mom would be seen as successful, she would have a good chance at any merit based scholarships. A visit with a prospective college department could bring some college money because the department would love seeing that person as a student. Sometimes, departments have money or access to money that can be channeled to fit a specific student’s situation. At the very least they would know of some pools of financial aid that does not often get used in their field.

Dual Income Mother

Another tough category to find mother scholarships is for those moms returning to school while contributing income to the household. Being dual income means that when family income is calculated for financial aid, one’s spouse will also be included. This can often put a mom outside of the range for need based financial aid. Also, what is not calculated is the effect of the lost of income in a family when a mom returns to school.

The best thing for a dual income mother to do is check for a school which caters to non-traditional students. They may have a number of scholarships that a returning mother student could qualify for. Also, more time should be given to seeking and applying for money for college.
